On Saturday, Oct 12th, Good Morning Silicon Valley Association held a High School Sustainability Leadership Workshop. The selected students brought their shared passion for environmental sustainability to learn and to explore their ideas about ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) and Sustainability.
In the workshop, the students participated in two lectures, starting off with “What is ESG” by Tim Liao, GMSV board member and Principal of Acorn Pacific Venture. Mr. Liao introduced students to ESG metrics and also shared industry perspectives on Impact Investing from when he led the Impact Investing Club at Columbia University. Nowadays, ESG and Impact Investing have become mainstream investments. Mr. Liao is an enthusiastic investor of climate tech.
GMSV’s advisor David Kuo led the second lecture. He is the Co-Founder and EVP Engineering of Waha Inc. His topic was “Metal Organic Framework – A Novel Sorbent for a Greener World.” He warned of water stress by 2030 and taught students to use water smartly. He brought up Waha’s technology to address water scarcity, energy savings for HVAC, and low energy Pure Water Generation.
Robin Tan, Co-Founder of ZenPacks, then joined Liao and Kuo to mentor small group discussions on various topics: How does fast fashion impact the natural environment in the US? How effective are the recycling programs in the Bay Area? How to reduce the amount of water used in your community? Although students had limited time to research their chosen topics, they did wonderful jobs addressing the issues with real-world data and inspired solutions.
Through designated lectures, stimulating research with peers, and interacting with mentors, students not only learned how to become more environmentally sustainable in their individual lives, but also gained foundational knowledge to motivate them in helping build our shared sustainable future.
Bravo, GMSV is very proud of our Sustainability Leadership workshop students.
